Skiing in Scotland boomed in popularity in the 1960’s although skiers were enjoying what we now call back country skiing long before then. Seen as the figurehead of all Scottish Ski Resorts, Cairngorm Mountain has produced more Olympians than any other part of Scotland. Aviemore was already a hotspot before the ski boom, attracting fresh air and wellness tourism. With its well connected transport system, it has proved very popular with many travellers over many years.
Cairngorm Mountain Ski Resort
The ski area is the highest in Scotland and usually has the longest season. Uplift options vary between the funicular train *currently closed*, T Bar and poma across a range of slopes suited to beginners, intermediates and experienced skiers. Back country, split boarding and cross country are all growing in popularity across the skiing community. Other facilities include a café, restaurant with toilet facilities, a shop for emergency supplies or a souvenir of your adventure, an exhibition of the story of Cairngorm and a tube slide for the summer season

Weather Conditions
Please check the conditions Cairngorm Mountain Report before you set off. At times, the weather is not suitable for children or inexperienced skiers. Avalanches are a real threat from time to time, so please check the report, especially if you are touring off piste.
Ski Patrol are on site to assist should anyone get into difficulties in the ski area. Cairngorm Mountain Rescue Service are also available should there be a serious incident on Cairngorm and beyond. We suggest that it is always best to be cautious as the weather can change and disorientate very quickly.
When does it Snow in Aviemore?
There can be snow in Aviemore from November through to early April, whether it is possible to ski varies depending on snowfall and conditions on the mountain. Snow conditions here can be very changeable but are generally best at start of year from January to April. The area offers plenty of other outdoor activities if the weather doesn’t make skiing possible.

Lift passes and season passes can be bought directly from Cairngorm Mountain website and on site. Multi day tickets are available as well as a day pass.
Getting to Cairngorm Mountain

What should you bring when going Skiing in Aviemore
- Sunburn is a real thing on the slopes, so bring your sun block for your face , sunglasses as well as goggles.
- Layer up. You can take layers off should you get too hot.
- Bring a rucksack for your essentials.
- Fully charge your phone
- Take money or a card for lunch or hot chocolate.
- Bring some high energy snacks – you will need to replenish throughout the day.
- Remember to stay hydrated with a flask or some water.

The Lecht offers some slightly less challenging terrain and a magic carpet for easy uplift for the children. Our lovely lodge The Maltings is a half hour drive from the Lecht, you don’t get much closer than that as The Lecht is fairly remote. The Lecht is a fantastic day out and a great alternative to Cairngorm should your plans change.
