Description
Picture this: the hot tub bubbling gently on the deck, loch water stretching out in front of you, and nothing to do for the next hour but watch the light change on the water. Kinloch Lodge sits on its own private stretch of Loch Meiklie in Balnain, a quiet loch tucked into Glen Urquhart, just ten minutes from Loch Ness itself at Drumnadrochit. The water here is genuinely yours, with a boat waiting on the grass at the shore and nothing between you and the loch.
This is a house built for the whole family, however many generations are travelling together, and dogs are genuinely welcome too. It sleeps eight across a king-size room, a double, a bunk room and a twin room, with plenty of space for grandparents, parents and kids to each have their own corner of the house. Two bathrooms and a separate WC make mornings easy for a full house, and a washer and dryer take care of the practical side of a longer stay.
Inside, it feels like a proper home rather than a rental. The farmhouse kitchen is warm and well equipped, the kind of room that pulls everyone in for a coffee or a shared cooking job after a day outdoors, and the big dining table means every generation can sit down together for dinner. Once the light goes, the wood burning stove takes over, and the two conservatories, filled with loch light through the day, become the place for a last dram or a slow morning with tea, watching the water. There is a good shelf of books for a rainy afternoon and a stack of games for evenings round the table, perfect for keeping everyone entertained together. Thick throws on the beds and dressing gowns on the hooks make it feel considered, not just furnished.
Outside is where this house really comes into its own, and there is genuinely something for everyone. A pretty garden runs down to the loch under huge mature trees, with a deck, a BBQ and a seating area for long summer evenings together, and a fire pit right on the loch side for once the light fades. Away from the glow of the city, the night skies here are properly dark, and a telescope is on hand for stargazing, so an evening in the hot tub can turn into tracing the stars over the water. The children have their own play area with a swing, a poly tunnel den and their own little boat to explore, while the adults can simply sit out with a glass of wine and watch the water. A bike store and private parking make coming and going easy, whether that's loading up for a day on the trails or arriving after a long drive north.
It is a genuine base for exploring the legend, too. Loch Ness itself is just down the road at Drumnadrochit, where the story of Nessie began, and where Urquhart Castle's ruins still look out over the water she is said to call home. Take a boat cruise out onto the loch for your own chance of a sighting, learn the full story at the Loch Ness Centre, or round off the day with a tasting at Great Glen Distillery. Head the other way from Kinloch Lodge and Glen Affric's ancient pinewoods and waterfalls, and the RSPB reserve at Corrimony, are minutes from the door, quiet enough that most people who come to see Loch Ness never find them.
Kinloch Lodge is one of the few places in this whole region with a genuinely private loch frontage, a house that comfortably holds three generations at once, and the whole of the Highlands, Nessie included, within easy reach. It is the kind of place you find yourself already planning to come back to before you have even left.
